Past budget adjustmentsโ€‹

Error budgets are key to tracking your service performance, but real-world eventsโ€”like planned outages or deploymentsโ€”can distort these metrics. While budget adjustments already help account for future events, we're now releasing the ability to retroactively address past events as well.

With past budget adjustments, you can retroactively adjust the error budgets of your SLOs, excluding specific historical events. Past budget adjustments allow you to:

Retroactively adjust for past events
Identify and address issues with past data inaccuracies (e.g., a misconfigured monitoring metric causing the SLO to appear broken). Retroactive adjustments allow users to exclude events caused by inaccurate data beyond their control.
Update your past adjustment events
Correct adjustment periods by extending or shortening timeframes to ensure accurate alignment with the actual events.
Delete obsolete adjustments
Remove no longer relevant adjustments (e.g., canceled maintenance) to restore accuracy in error budgets and reliability metrics.

Organization admins can manage past adjustment events using the sloctl budgetadjustment events commands (get, update, delete) or brand new public adjustments API.

caution

The budget adjustments API is currently in

Beta
and subject to change.

While using this API, please take into account that future updates may modify the specification or behavior. We recommend designing your implementation with flexibility to accommodate potential changes.

Managing past adjustments requires sloctl version 0.9.0 or higher.

By introducing past budget adjustments, weโ€™re giving you full control over how both past and future events impact your error budgetsโ€”keeping your SLOs accurate and actionable.
